Beware! Some Facebook ads selling fake luxury items

New York: a brand new study has found that some advertisements promoting fashion and luxury things on Facebook may be fake.
Two cybersecurity researchers analysed over a 1,000 Facebook ads and located that almost 1 / 4 of these merchandise are counterfeit things, Mashable reported .

The duo focused on the a hundred and eighty fashion and luxury ads - 43 of that led to websites selling counterfeit goods.

"You don't know where you're going to end up. In several cases, your credit card is in danger, due to obscure payment systems backed by companies you have no idea who they are," researchers Andrea Stroppa and Agostino Specchiarello told Mashable.

The websites usually had legitimate looking URLs and even have fake logos of security and payment system companies, researchers found.

According to them, since they started the study, many of such ads are removed.

Reacting to this, a Facebook representative said: "We prohibit fraudulent or misleading claims or content, and to enforce our terms and policies, we have invested significant resources in developing a strong advertising review programme that features each automated and manual review of ads".
